Natural disasters

Just hours ago the news of Japan being hit by a disastrous earthquake with an 8.9 magnitude shocked the entire world. Countries and people from all over the globe stood as one at that very moment, praying and wishing for the best. Many innocent lives were taken without any notice and thousands of people lost their loved ones in this horrible calamity.

One minute I was lying on the bed comfortably without a single worry and the next minute the citizens of Japan had to deal with their biggest nightmare; their country in complete and total chaos due to the quake and tsunami. The saddest part is, nothing could have prevented it from happening. None of us could have done anything to stop it from taking place.

And now that it has happened- we can’t do anything to make things better. The damage is already done. Homes and buildings have been washed away, properties and belongings have been completely wrecked. People have died, many are seriously injured and traumatised. This is a crucial time where the world stands as one to offer anything and everything we can.

Skin colour, race, religion, countries, differences – none of them should matter the slightest bit right now. Most of you who are reading this are probably people who know me, who reside in Malaysia. We are lucky because we very seldom have to experience such indescribable disasters, almost never.

But just bear in mind, Japan didn’t see it coming at all. They didn’t get a single warning. And the world – it’s a funny place. You’ll never know what happens next. Can we guarantee that Malaysia will stand still and strong, without having to ever deal with such incidents? I don’t think any of us will dare say we’re definitely safe.

So don’t take things for granted, don’t waste time that you don’t have. Anything could happen anytime. Don’t think that things like this will never happen to you.

Let’s hold hands and together help Japan regain its health and restore its home. Because it’s not just about the Japanese, it involves all of us – as one. If you are a believer, say a prayer each day for those who have hit rock bottom. And for those who aren’t, you hope for the best too. You hope that the amount of people rescued are more than the number of deaths, you hope that they will not have to undergo such catastrophe again.

You hope that the world could be safe for all of us.

It may remain as hope, but it’s worth a try.

As I sighed silently because the place I went to didn’t serve my fave dish during lunch, complained about the ridiculously hot weather & wished I could take my ovaries out due to menstrual cycle, 65 people died due to an earthquake in New Zealand while hundreds lost their loved ones. I’m ashamed.

Now you and I are probably sitting in comfort at our homes or somewhere safe while more than dozens of people are in chaos. Today might be an average or bad day for us, but it could possibly be the worst for some people.

Be appreciative that you’re alive today.

Here’s something we will probably never ever do in our entire lives: cry for a stranger.

Sounds weird to you, but just read on.

How many of you have cried for people who died in the bus crash that happened not too long ago? How about those who died during the earthquake at Haiti?

Trapped miners in New Zealand who did not make it out alive? Children who were kidnapped and murdered, some raped? What about people who die in hospitals each day due to failed operations or inability of providing necessary and matching organs to save their lives?

The Earth is round and we’re all in it together. That means whatever happens in this circle, it affects all of us. Because we’re all in this circle (yes I’m aware that it’s sphere but circle sounds more suitable).

And I don’t mean we should cry on a daily basis because that’s what is really happening: there are people dying every single day. But I just feel that we are all not caring enough.

Some don’t even know what’s going on in all these places in the world and they can be so ignorant about it. Celebrities’ divorces are getting more coverage than planet saving.

Maybe it’s boring that we always hear and see the same news, of people dying and people suffering at different parts of the world. Maybe if the amount of people who actually care can be unnumbered, then a difference can be made.

I think one never really feels it until something happens and it can be related to. Which is sad, because it takes a lot of losing to gain some realisation from the people.

Maybe someday we would run out of things to lose.

Today, I found out that another explosion took place in the mine in New Zealand where 22 miners were trapped alive in. Experts were saying chances are it was a 100%-casualties situation. Just two days ago, I was hoping they’d make it out alive, each and every one of them. The rescue team could not initiate a rescue process because it is believed that the mine contains a type of deadly gas and it might jeopardise the health of the rescue members.

It is really sad and devastating when something like this happens. These people do not deserve to die, their family members and loved ones do not deserve to lose them in such a way. The victims were fathers, husbands, brothers, sons, perhaps even grandfathers. How I wish some sort of technology or method could be invented so that no human labour will have to be used for mines. It may cause a lot of people their jobs, but it’s going to save a lot of lives in the long run.

Tens and hundreds of people have died worldwide due to such unfortunate accidents yet it continues to occur. I can’t begin to imagine how the family members of the victims must be feeling. Imagine one minute you have a father or a husband, the next minute you hear the news or get a phone call informing you that you no longer do. In a split second, your whole world changes and takes a 360-degree turn.

29 (if I’m not mistaken) miners in China were brought to safety after their very own series of trapped miners incident. They were lucky, these 22 men who died in New Zealand weren’t. The officials said it is most likely none of them made it and that dashed the prayers of many hopeful people but I still hope that somehow, a miracle perhaps, took place and they are still alive. It was very upsetting to know that some sort of hazardous gas was present at the scene because otherwise, rescue team would have started their work immediately.

I really do hope an incident like this will not repeatedly happen because really, human lives are so precious and it’s such a waste when they end this way.
